The Attorney General, Hon Kiryowa Kiwanuka, attended as keynote speaker, the workshop organized by the Law Council, to deliberate on mainly the minimum standards for Legal Education and Training and any other current issues pertaining to the same, in Uganda.
In his address, the Hon Attorney General thanked the participants for taking time off their busy schedules to attend the workshop, noting that there were no better people to discuss and deliberate on the challenges facing Legal Education and Training than those at the workshop.
He implored them to find solutions to seven pivotal issues facing regulation of legal education in Uganda. These were; to distinguish the role of the National Council for Higher Education and the Law Council in the regulation of Legal Education in Uganda, to set standards for the accreditation of Universities intending to teach Law and even those already teaching Law in Uganda and also to discuss the minimum entry requirements for admission into the Bachelor of Laws program.
He requested the participants to among others, come up with guidelines for Law Council to follow while regulating Law Teaching Universities in Uganda, to set minimum entry requirements for the Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, consider possibilities of liberalization of the teaching of the Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and also to set guidelines for consideration during the enrolment process as an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda.
He concluded his remarks by wishing the participants nice deliberations and asked God, on their behalf, to give them the wisdom needed to undertake the enormous task of transforming Legal Education and Training in Uganda.
The plenary discussions during the workshop where led by Counsel Nelson Nerima and mostly centered about the seven issues raised by the Attorney General as the most salient that can and should transform Legal Education and Training in Uganda.
The closing remarks for the workshop where given by the Hon Lady Justice Irene Mulyagonja, who is the Chairperson of the Law Council, and thanked all participants for their views given and promised them that the Law Councilshall sit and make appropriate decisions for the betterment of Legal Education and Training in Uganda.
The workshop was attended by among others, Justices and Judges of the Courts of Judicature, the Deans of all law teaching faculties in Uganda, past presidents and members of the Law Society of Uganda, Senior Management staff from the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, members of the Law Council, staff of the Law Council Secretariat among others.
